Suriyanar Kovil
Suriyanar Kovil from Thanjavur
- Temple History
This site is believed to be where the nine planetary deities suffered from leprosy due to a curse from Lord Brahma. After intense penance to Lord Shiva in nearby Thirumangalakkudi, they regained their powers and were instructed to bless devotees at Suryanar Koil. The Sun God is predominantly worshipped here among the nine planets.
- Greatness of Temple
This temple is unique in Tamil Nadu for having separate shrines dedicated to all nine planetary deities. Built over 900 years ago in Dravidian architecture by Chola King Kulothunga Cholan, it showcases rich historical significance.
- Temple Speciality
Although built by Tamil King Kulothunga Cholan, the temple has also been patronized by the King of Srivijayam, present-day Indonesia, highlighting the religious ties between the two nations. It uniquely features separate shrines for all nine planetary deities. Suriyanar Koil is a prominent stop on the pilgrimage circuit of Navagraha temples.
- Temple Festivals
The ten-day festival of Ratha Sapthami is celebrated during the Tamil month of Thai, from mid-January to mid-February. Special poojas and rituals are also conducted during the transition days of Saturn and Jupiter.
