Thiruvathira Festival

Thiruvathira Festival From Kerala

Thiruvathira Festival in Kerala, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December/January), honors the birthday of Lord Shiva and is one of the region’s most cherished festivals. Women, especially married women and young girls, observe a day of fasting as a sign of devotion, seeking the welfare and prosperity of their families. For young girls, this fast also symbolizes their hopes for an ideal life partner.

A significant custom during the festival is Pathirappochoodal, where women adorn their hair with flowers and perform the traditional dance form known as Thiruvathirakali. This vibrant dance is characterized by women dressed in traditional Kerala sarees, who gather in a circle around a lit lamp. They sing Thiruvathira songs dedicated to Lord Shiva while clapping their hands in sync with their dance movements, creating a joyous and harmonious atmosphere.

Oonjalattam, or swinging, is another important aspect of the celebration, enhancing the festive spirit. The festival holds particular significance for Nair and Nampoothiri families, with women beginning their day early to sing and prepare for the celebrations.
