Jewish Synagogue
Jewish Synagogue From Kochi
- History
The Paradesi Synagogue, established in 1568, is the oldest functioning synagogue in Kochi, Kerala, located in the historic district of Jew Town. It stands as the only active synagogue among the original seven that once served the thriving Malabari Jewish community, known for its significant role in the spice trade. This architectural gem showcases intricate Chinese tiles, a stunning wooden bimah, and beautiful Belgian chandeliers, all reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Constructed adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace, the synagogue was built on land donated by the Raja of Kochi after the original structure was destroyed during Portuguese persecutions in the 16th century. The name “Paradesi,” which means ‘foreign,’ signifies the synagogue’s establishment with the support of Dutch allies, illustrating the unique blend of cultural influences in this historical site. Today, the synagogue serves not only as a place of worship but also as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Cochin Jewish community.
- Why Special?
