Attukal Bhagavathy Temple
Attukal Bhagavathy Temple From Thiruvananthapuram
- Temple History
The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a significant religious site dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple honors its main deity in three distinct forms: Maha Saraswathi (Goddess of Knowledge), Maha Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth), and Kali/Durga/Parvathy (Goddess of Power). Revered as Attukal Amma, she embodies the dual aspects of preservation and destruction and is often associated with Kannaki, the central figure in Ilanko Adikal’s epic, Silapathikaram.
The history of Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is deeply connected to the tale of Kannaki from the Tamil epic Silapathikaram, authored by Ilanko Adikal. Kannaki was the devoted wife of Kovalan, a wealthy merchant’s son. After Kovalan became infatuated with a dancer named Madhavi and squandered all his wealth, he returned to Kannaki, who graciously forgave him and gave him her gold anklets to sell in Madurai to regain their fortunes
- Specialty of the Temple
Often called the “Sabarimala of Women,” Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is distinguished by its stunning architecture, which harmoniously blends elements from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu styles. The temple features intricate carvings that depict a variety of deities, including Mahishasuramardini and Sree Parvathy alongside Lord Shiva, as well as detailed representations of various mythological stories on its walls.
