Pongal Festival

Pongal Festival / Thai Pongal

Thai Pongal is a traditional harvest festival celebrated predominantly in Tamil Nadu, India, and by Tamils worldwide. It marks the beginning of the Tamil month “Thai” and coincides with the solar equinox when the sun transitions into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara).
  • Bhogi: The first day involves discarding old belongings, symbolizing new beginnings.
  • Thai Pongal: The main day is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya). People prepare “Pongal,” a sweet dish made from newly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery, and offer it to the Sun as thanks for a bountiful harvest.
  • Mattu Pongal: On the third day, cattle, especially cows and bulls, are honored for their contribution to farming. They are bathed, decorated, and fed special treats.
  • Kaanum Pongal: The final day is for socializing and celebrating with family and friends. It involves outings, exchanging gifts, and enjoying time together.
