Dakshinachitra Museum
Dakshinachitra Museum From Muthukadu
- Dakshina Chitra Museum showcases the vibrant culture and lifestyle of South India, particularly focusing on villages at risk of disappearing due to globalization. Located in Muttukadu on the East Coast Road, near MGM Dizzee World, this museum plays a crucial role in preserving the rich cultural heritage that has thrived in these communities for generations. It highlights the impact of urban migration on rural populations and aims to maintain the traditions that define these villages.
- The museum features a collection of eighteen meticulously relocated and restored heritage houses representing Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Each house offers insights into the daily lives and customs of Southern Indian communities, with notable examples including the Brahmin House and the Silk Weavers’ House. Visitors can experience authentic village settings filled with traditional household items, reflecting a way of life that has endured for centuries.
- Beyond the heritage houses, Dakshina Chitra enhances the visitor experience with workshops, traditional games, and regular theme-based exhibitions that explore Southern India’s cultural richness. With amenities like conservation labs, a library, and guest accommodations, the museum provides a comprehensive experience. Open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, except Tuesdays, Dakshina Chitra invites visitors to immerse themselves in the enduring traditions and lifestyles of this remarkable region.
