In the ancient city of Madurai, King Koon Pandyan, a staunch supporter of Jainism, fell gravely ill, and despite the Jains’ remedies, he found no relief. Just as hope was fading, a young Brahmin boy appeared and miraculously healed him, prompting the king to embrace devotion to Lord Shiva. Threatened by this shift, the Jains challenged the boy to prove whose faith was stronger through trials by fire (Analvatham) and water (Punalvatham). Remarkably, the boy’s sacred manuscripts emerged unscathed from both tests, an extraordinary event that became legendary and led to the construction of a magnificent temple in Thiruvengadam, celebrating the triumph of devotion and faith.
