Nachiyar Kovil Temple

Nachiyar Kovil From Tiruchirappalli

A Chola king named Nandha Cholan, longing for an heir, fervently prayed to Lord Vishnu. Blessed with a vision, he was promised a daughter who would marry the Lord at the right age. The king found the infant on a lotus in a forest tank and named her Kamalavalli. As she grew, Kamalavalli fell in love with Lord Renganatha Swamy of Srirangam. Their divine union is celebrated today as the “Serthi Sevai Festival.” In honor of this, Nandha Cholan built the temple, where the Lord is fondly called “Azhagiya Manavala Perumal.”

The temple, showcasing eighth-century Dravidian architecture, features Azhagiya Manavala Perumal seated in the sanctum, surrounded by exquisite paintings of Nammalvar and various incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Renewed in the mid-1800s, its vibrant frescoes depict scenes from the Garuda Purana and Dharmic teachings, with only 8,000 of the original 19,000 verses preserved. Financial records displayed around the sanctum reflect remarkable administrative transparency and meticulous expense management during its construction.

Devotees may render worship to Lord Azhagiya Manavala Perumal along with His Consort from 5 AM to 12:30 PM & 4 PM to 8:30 PM daily.
