kulasekarapattinam Temple Form Thoothukudi

Located 20 kilometers from Thiruchendur, Kulasekarapattinam is a historic port city established during the reign of Maravarman Kulasekaran, primarily for taxing salt and pearl exports. The temple here was constructed with the belief that the goddess would serve as a guardian of the village, providing assistance to her devotees in times of need. Over time, the goddess has become revered for her power and piety. While residing in this port city, the king built a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, positioned in the northeast corner and facing north. The deity was adorned with a pearl necklace, earning her the name Muthaaramman. This ancient temple has a rich history, dating back approximately 300 years.

The legend has it that Goddess Amman appeared in the dream of a sculptor and ordered him to carve a statue of her and give it to the priest from Kulasai. Ergo the Amman is named as Mutharamman, as she herself wanted to carve her idol.

Next to Mysore, Kulasekarapattinam celebrates Dasara (Dussehra) in a grand manner for 10 days. The grand celebrations will commence on day 1 with the flag hoisting in the temple. Every year Dasara festival is celebrated in September or October. Maha Shivaratri, Ragu Pooja, Villaku Pooja are some other festivals commemorated in this temple.
