Uthirakosamangai Temple
Uthirakosamangai Temple From Ramanathapuram
- Temple HIstory
Thiru Uthirakosamangai is home to an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, dating back over 3,000 years. This sacred site is where the deity Mangalanathar imparted profound spiritual wisdom and secrets of Hinduism to his consort, Mangalambigai, echoing in various spiritual texts and Saivaite scriptures.
A highlight of the temple is the impressive six-foot idol of Lord Nataraja, intricately carved from a single emerald stone, a treasure that has fascinated devotees for centuries. Notably, Lord Nataraja is covered in sandal paste year-round to protect the emerald, but on Thiruvadhirai Star during the Tamil month of Margazhi, he is unveiled for a rare glimpse on January 2nd, drawing many for the Arudhra Dharshan celebrations.
In addition to Nataraja and Mangalanathar, the temple features Goddess Mangalanayaki and boasts a magnificent seven-tiered gateway tower. The statue of Yali, a mythical lion-man creature, adds to the temple’s architectural marvels. Inside lies the Sahasra Lingam, showcasing 1,008 distinct Shiva Lingams, symbolizing devotees’ eternal devotion to Lord Shiva. Surrounding the temple are beautiful ber trees and tranquil water bodies, enhancing its mystical charm, while fragrant screw pine flowers are uniquely favored by Lord Mangalanathar during rituals.
