Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar Temple From Thiruvenkadu

The ancient Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar temple features the presiding deity Swetharanyeswarar and his consort, Brahma Vidhyambigai. It is said that Lord Brahma, Indra, and his white elephant worshipped here. The temple also has a shrine for Lord Agora Moorthy, another incarnation of Shiva, who is believed to have defeated the demon Padmasuran.

This temple, part of the Navagraha series, is dedicated to Lord Budhan, representing intelligence, wisdom, and peace. Devotees visit year-round, offering white clothes and cereals, seeking blessings for protection from planetary influences.

The temple’s bull, Nandi, bears nine holes, symbolizing its battle wounds from the fight with the demon Surapadman. When Nandi was injured protecting Lord Shiva, Shiva became enraged and took the form of Agora Moorthy to destroy the demon. This temple is also known as the “Varanasi of the South.”

The Chariot Festival, a ten-day event held in the Tamil month of Thai (mid-January to mid-February), is a major celebration. On the fifth day, special poojas and rituals are performed in honor of Agora Moorthy, making it the most significant day of the festival.
