Shri Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple

Shri Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple Form Thiruvarur

Sri Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruthuraipoondi, near Thiruvarur, features Lord Siva as Gajasamhara Murthy, symbolizing the destruction of arrogance, pride, and jealousy. Devotees believe that offering prayers here on full moon and new moon days brings prosperity and a life free from sorrows.

In Tarukavanam, proud and arrogant Rishis believed their Yagas gave Lord Siva his divine power. To teach them a lesson, Siva appeared as a handsome beggar, mesmerizing the Rishis’ wives, while Vishnu disguised as a beautiful woman, attracting the Rishis. Realizing they were fooled, the Rishis attempted to destroy the gods using an elephant. Siva then revealed himself, killed the elephant, and shattered the Rishis’ pride. This legend explains the temple’s significance.

The temple celebrates several festivals, with Chithirai (April-May), Navratri (Sep-Oct), and Shivaratri being the most notable.

This temple is exclusively for Ashwini starrers, who believe that making special offerings to Piravi Marundeeswarar will erase their sins and grant them new births.
